CHRISTMAS CAROL TRADITION The first reported Christmas carol in North America originated from a Jesuit missionary, Saint John de Brébeuf, to the Huron Indians. Father de Brébeuf wrote, “Jesous Ahatonnia” (“Jesus is Born”) in the Huron language as an adaptation to a 16th-century French folk song.
